Patient Process – Caring for Your Oral Appliance
Caring for your mandibular advancement splint (MAS) is important to ensure its effectiveness, longevity, and hygiene. Here are some general tips on how to care for your mandibular advancement splint:
Clean Your Teeth Before Wearing:
When it’s time to go to bed, make sure that you clean your teeth properly before inserting the oral appliance. This will lower your risk of potential cavities forming and reduce the chances of harmful bacteria forming on your teeth or within your oral appliance while you sleep.
Cleaning your device:
Regular cleaning of your MAS is essential to prevent the buildup of bacteria and plaque. You can clean your splint after use by gently brushing it with a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild soap, do not use tooth paste as it is abrasive.
We also recommend that once a week you soak your device in denture cleaner for 5 to 10 minutes. Make sure to rinse it thoroughly with water afterward.
Storage:
When you are not wearing your MAS, store it in its case to protect it from damage and to prevent loss. Avoid leaving it exposed to air or sunlight and exposing it to extreme temperatures
Keep it Dry:
After cleaning your MAS, make sure to dry it thoroughly before storing it. Moisture can promote bacterial growth and affect the lifespan of the splint.
Regular Check-up:
Schedule regular check-ups with Dental Sleep Professionals to ensure that your MAS is fitting properly and is in good condition. Your dentist can make any necessary adjustments or repairs.
By following these care tips, you can ensure that your mandibular advancement splint remains effective, comfortable, and hygienic for years to come.
